How much is Health and Safety worth to you? Aside from the fact that it is implemented to keep you and your staff, well, healthy and safe (!) failure to adhere to Health and Safety rules could cost you where it can really hurt… your wallet. Since the implementation of a new sentencing guideline last year the value of fines for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has more than doubled. Data collected by global law firm Clyde&Co show that the total value of fines collected in a year totalled £76.7m. Definitely not small change!

Construction sectors have born the brunt of the number of fines levied – perhaps not a surprise as this is the area the HSE deems most risky.

In summary, saving £80 here and there by not adequately training your staff simply isn’t good business practice when the fines for breaching Health and Safety Guidelines can run to the tens, hundreds or even millions of pounds.
